Heart of the Morning
Composer: Rick Mareske
Heart of the morning da da da
Watch ing the river flow
I let my heart sing
Ease my mind for awhile
Ease my mind for a while
Part of the sunshine
Touching the life with in
remade my world so fine
Ease my mind for a while
Ease my mind for a while
Reach in' highs but missin' lows
For gotten questions softened blows
I know I want to be here now
Heart of the morning da da da
Watch ing the river flow
I let my heart sing
Ease my mind for awhile
Ease my mind for a while
Reach in' highs but missin' lows
For gotten questions softened blows
I know I want to be here now
Heart of the morning da da da
Ease my mind for a while

Outside Dawg
Composer: Rick Mareske
I'm an outside dawg
Can't fence me in
I'm an outside dawg
Runin free towards the country
Put up a fence
I'll jump over it
say good bye
I'm runnin' free
I'm an outside dawg
You won't let me in
I'm an outside dawg
Won't even take me for a ride
throw me a bone
I'll be chasin' it
call my name
and I'll be gone

Haven’t Had Enough
Composer: Rick Mareske
No more discussion
We've seen it through
I know some bod y look in to fill an emp ty room
No more regrets or love that denies
Fill me up havn't had enough
haven't had enough
Draw me closer draw me deeper
haven't had enough
havn't had enough
No more confusion
There's nothing to hide
Rev it up let's take it for another ride
Don’t have a potion
who needs a cure
Fill me up havn't had enough
haven't had enough
Draw me closer draw me deeper
haven't had enough
havn't had enough
There's a place to meet
under my sheets
a place about your size
If your lookin' for an open door
there's one before your eyes
If you can't explain the receding pain
I know no cause to try
Here is a chance
C'mon let's dance
No more discussion
We've seen it through
havn't had enough
havn't had enough
havn't had enough

Thunderstorm
Composer: Rick Mareske
Thunderstorm living light sky
In it you'll fly
On your wing
and living the life that you know
High tempered winds
and crashing clouds let you grow
earth voices hushed at your side
hiding a way
a waiting the day
Windy air lets you go free
fly to the sea
where you are destined to be
Doesn't make sense to live in you're grave
If you aren't free there's nothin' to save
As the clouds part you live on
A spirit of life
Life for the earth
Trees will grow tall to the call
Of lightening clouds
Stormy skies weep for us all
Doesn't make sense to live in you're grave
If you aren't free there's nothin' to save
Doesn't make sense to live in you're grave
If you aren't free there's nothin' to save
Nothin to save
Nothin to save
Nothin to save

But I Lost It
Composer: Rick Mareske
I had everything but lost it
You gave me noth in' but I took it
I wanted love and you kissed me once
The sun kept beatin' down beatin' down
There was nothing and you killed it
I had a lovely day you filled it

River
Composer: Rick Mareske
A river crashin' through a rocky bed
There is a story here it seems
I watch the water from observatory
I see the power all submerge
The wind is howl in' with the air on fire
A destiny for who knows where
out of the old the walls come tumblin' down
But somethin' new will soon emerge
A river crashin'
The eagle soars on voicees sung before
I only hear them when I dream
There is a caution in the wind I fear
Keeps my feet planted on the earth
There is a magic that transforms the soul
The knife that cuts can also heal
The cross of goodness can't escape the pain
and I am living for this birth
A river crashin' in a rocky bed
The wind is howlin' with the air on fire
The eagle soars on voices sung be fore
The artist balanced on a high wire
The artist balanced on a high wire
the artist balanced on a high wire

That Time Ain't Now

That Time Ain't Now
By Rick Mareske
Lifting her finger
She motioned the singer
Hopin' that he'd buy her a drink
He was to busy flirtin' with daydreams
'Bout how he would someday be a star
Occasionally, there's a time to get to know someone
But that time ain't now
I think it's reasonable to slide up beside and feel someone
But that time ain't now
She didn't notice the guy in the phone booth
watchin' every move her body made
Bar scenes are a means to realize your sex dreams
Wouldn't you like to meet me in the bar
Occasionally, there's a time to get to know someone
But that time ain't now
I think it's reasonable to slide up beside and feel someone
But that time ain't now
Rockin' roll screamin' above all this dreamin'
everybody's wonderin' why they paid
But that time ain’t now

Atnas Sulac
Composer: Rick Mareske
Poem by: Carl Bettis
Edited by Rick Mareske
The word is passed from mouth to mouth
Of the anti santa who lives down south
Atnas Sulac has bloody jaws and spiney hair and six inch claws
Wears baby skin boots and a possum coat
his rickety sled pulled by a goat
He's thin as a shadow and that's a won der
'cause he eats three elves and a rein deer for dinner
And all the children that San ta's forgotten
Atnas rewards for being so ho ho rotten
Now Little Jimmy Jagged who likes to start fires
puts glass on the road to slice up tires
on christmas eve was shut in his room
after forcing mom's poodle to drink perfume
Atnas crept from the toilet bowl
said Jimmy i see your a boy with soul
don't let these block heads spoil your fun
take this machete and watch them run
And all the chil dren that San ta's for gotten
Atnas rewards for being so ho ho rotten
Dear dear Sally sweetums got no blow gun nor axe
Atnas filled her stocking with chocolate exlax
which good Sally shared with her family
who soon were all sweating so clamily
They beat their darling black and blue
now listen up kiddies this could happen to you
Sal learned her lesson now she's gotten mean
she lives at reform school and threatens the dean
And all the children that Santa's for gotten
Atnas rewards for being so ho ho rotten
Now all you kleptos pyros and thugs
keep lying to teachers keep torturing bugs
pour milk in the blender with soap and a frog
and give it to granny as christmas eggnog
You may have to kiss your freedom fair well
you may be locked in a lonesome cell
your parents and preachers may damn you to hell
but Atnas Sulac will reward you well
And all the chil dren that San ta's for gotten
Atnas rewards for being so ho ho rotten
And all the chil dren that San ta's for gotten
Atnas rewards for being so ho ho ho rotten

Deanne
Composer: Rick Mareske
Deanne went a way
walks alone now
Noone blocks her way
Owned by no one
She's like an empty vessel
Out on the streets at midnight
She's heard a cry for something
and now she's waiting
Deanne walked a way
from the good life
No one blocks her way
owned by no one
A whisper in the darkness
Is all that calls her name now
The sound that speaks to poets
Where words electrify
Deanne went a way
Walks a lone now
Noone blocks her way
owned by no one
The whisper wants the vessel
That walks the streets at midnight
It needs to cry for something
Where words electrify

Last Song
Composer: Rick Mareske
This will be my last song
before the next one germinates
and lifts its tiny cotyledons
to the light of day
This will be the first time
I step into the sweet abyss
walk in to the morning mist
then we begin to play

Rick Mareske Kansas City, Kansas
I compose music, study music composition and guitar, and play in local jazz ensembles. The compositions included in this album are my favorites of my attempts and I am fortunate to get my favorite musicians to contribute. Stylistically this is primarily a jazz album but influences include everything from bluegrass and country to soul and 20th century harmony. The goal was to honor the music. Enjoy ... more
